Dorset Council has published its Local Plan Options Consultation document today, marking a significant milestone in the development of the new Local Plan that will guide planning decisions across the Dorset Council area for the next 17 years. The consultation, which runs from 18th August to 13th October 2025, sets out opportunities for meeting development needs and include the main consultation document alongside four substantial appendices. These include Appendix A covering opportunity sites for housing, Appendix B detailing opportunity sites for employment, Appendix C addressing opportunity sites for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople, and Appendix D identifying opportunity areas for renewable energy development.
The Council has identified over 240 opportunity sites across Tier 1, 2 and 3 settlements that together could deliver around 33,000 new homes, representing the Council’s response to government commitments to address housing shortages while enabling economic growth and delivering essential infrastructure.
Brett Spiller, Director at Chapman Lily Planning, commented: “The emerging spatial strategy will shape Dorset’s growth over the coming decades. This consultation represents a critical juncture for landowners, developers and communities across Dorset. We are pleased to see Dorset Council exploring a wide range of potential development opportunities and embracing the economic social and environmental benefits that arise from sustainable development can bring. The team and I will be spend the coming weeks carefully reviewing the content and making representations on behalf of our clients. With opportunity sites now formally identified, stakeholders have a critical eight-week window during which to engage.”
