Over the past year, I have had the privilege of working closely with the Wareham Area Men’s Shed group to develop and progress a planning application for their new workshop in Wareham. I am delighted to confirm that planning permission has now been approved by Dorset Council, which is fantastic news for Men’s Shed and the wider local community. This marks a significant milestone for the project and allows the group to move forward with certainty and confidence.
We are extremely grateful to the Dorset Council planning team for their clear communication, constructive engagement, and timely decision‑making throughout the process. Their pragmatic and professional approach was greatly appreciated and played an important role in reaching a positive outcome.
The application also benefited from strong political and community support. Particular thanks are extended to Cllr Ryan Holloway, the local ward member, for his support and understanding of the importance of the Men’s Shed project. Equally, the backing from the wider community was outstanding, with over 70 letters of support submitted in favour of the proposal. This show of encouragement was hugely appreciated by Men’s Shed and demonstrated the strength of local feeling behind the project.
The approval reflects Dorset Council’s considered and proportionate approach to the proposal. In determining the application, the Council carefully assessed the long‑term implications of the building and concluded that a permanent form of consent was both suitable and acceptable in planning terms. By recognising that the development would not result in long‑term harm, Dorset Council was able to grant permission without restrictive or unnecessary conditions, providing Men’s Shed with clarity and certainty for the future. This outcome is particularly important for Men’s Shed, as it enables the organisation to plan with confidence, secure funding, and invest fully in their facilities without concern over time‑limited permissions. The decision demonstrates a pragmatic and supportive approach to community‑led development and ensures that Men’s Shed can continue delivering vital social, wellbeing, and skills‑based support to the Wareham community for the long term.
This approval represents a genuine collective effort between Men’s Shed, the local community, elected members, and Dorset Council. Chapman Lily Planning is proud to have supported such a valuable project and looks forward to seeing Men’s Shed thrive in its new home for many years to come.
