Amendments to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill [‘LURB’] were tabled in parliament yesterday. The debate continues today but the amendments, backed by some 50 backbenchers, seeks to suspend nationally imposed housing targets, the need to demonstrate 5 year housing land supply and the presumption in favour of sustainable development.
Paul Brocklehurst, Chairman of the LPDF, described the amendment as troubling given the other burdens on the housing industry, including the housing safety bill, and its importance to the economy with over 700,000 people directly or indirectly employed.
Brett Spiller, Director at Chapman Lily Planning expressed significant concern that a crucial vote on the LURB might be postponed, delaying the progress of the Bill. Brett noted that ‘whilst the LURB is a mixed bag, many are looking to it to force water companies to clean up their act and resolve nutrient neutrality issues’.
