At the invite of Melanie Kaviani, Senior Lecturer (PSA) Architecture at the Arts University Bournemouth and founder of Kaviani Architects, Associate Director Alan Davies gave the third year Architecture students an insight into the UK planning system.
Alan took the students on a journey through time, describing the inception of planning, the Garden City movement, post-war reconstruction, right through to bang-up to date advice regarding the current plan led system. He even explained how to comply with the Councils validation checklist to ensure that an application gets registered – a creative art in its own right! Finally, Alan asked the students to think about how they might present their scheme to a Planning Committee and audience in less than three minutes, something akin to the ‘elevator pitch’.
Mel explained ‘Last Friday, we were honoured to have Mr Alan Davies the associate director at Chapman Lily Planning Limited as our guest lecturer at AUB (Arts University Bournemouth), conducting an excellent presentation for our third year undergraduate Architecture students, on the topic of Town Planning which gave our students an insight into the planning process, policies and how to navigate their way through the complex planning system.
As a practicing Chartered Architect at Kaviani Architects and the PSA senior lecturer at AUB, we are aware that architects cannot know everything, but they must know where to go to get the best advice by bringing in the expertise of other consultants.
We were privileged to have the very knowledgeable Alan Davies, who gave up his valuable time to speak to our students about planning matters to broaden their knowledge base’.
