This week saw the publication of the results of the public consultation on the options for Local Government reorganisation in Dorset. The findings of the consultation suggests that a two way spit is favoured.
We’ve been reflecting on what this might mean for planning locally:
- The favoured split would ensure that the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole conurbation can speak and act as a single entity; a far stronger proposition when it comes to attracting Government funding and investment.
- We would also expect to see greater alignment of planning policies and procedures, albeit integration will take time.
- Notwithstanding the favoured split, the two areas would still need to work closely in order to fulfil the duty to co-operate – which requires local planning authorities to work together to deliver future housing and employment needs. Not least because opportunities for the outward expansion of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are extremely limited.’
The next steps are for each Council to consider all of the issues linked to reorganisation and whether they support change. This will take place in January and if an agreement is reached a request will be made to the Secretary of State to move forward with reorganisation.
