As CL Planning reported previously, government are consulting on proposals to allow greater flexibility in the existing ‘permitted development’ legislation which allows householders to extend their homes without requiring planning permission.
Richard Mitchell (Associate Director) stated; “Having now had the chance to look at the proposals and feed comments back to the government, these proposals are generally welcome and give a little more flexibility to homeowners who wish to extend or alter their homes. However, I did make the point that as some changes will not apply ‘where visible form the street’, clear definition of how a ‘street’ is interpreted must be given – for example, does this include being visible from a private right of way? Is it only as seen from the street at the front of the property? Or glimpsed between nearby properties? I can see much confusion and uncertainty unless government makes it expressly clear on this element of the proposals”.
